Did your sister, cousin or good friend recently head off to college? College can be an overwhelming experience – between meeting different people from around the country (or world), living with a total stranger and having complete control over how you manage your time – it can get produce a whirlwind of emotions. That’s why a care package every now and then can help ground her, showing her that someone cares.
There are all types of care package possibilities. Here’s a run-down of what your college girl could use:
- Food: This is especially important when the dining hall might have irregular hours, or she might not have any change for vending machines. While dietary habits and restrictions may vary, snacks and instant, easy to cook food is very popular. Ramen (a quintessential collegiate delight) is not the healthiest choice, so try other items that come in a box, like granola bars or cereal.
- Hygiene and Cleanliness: Unless she was lucky enough to have a bathroom right in her dorm room, most have to endure a communal shower that everyone shares. Germs galore! So it’s best to send her items to help keep her clean: shower shoes, bathrobes, toothbrush/toothpaste, body wash or soap, towels and deodorant. And of course, essential feminine hygiene products!
- School Supplies: Don’t forget – it’s college! Binders, notebooks, pens and pencils. Even though many students type on their laptops for notes, some professors may still require good ol’ fashion pen and paper, as technology may be too disruptive. But your box could include printer ink and paper, folders to hold research papers, or a flash drive to store documents.
- Personal Effects: While many students tend to bring their whole lives with them to college, especially freshmen, they may have forgotten a precious item or two. So you can always send her her favorite doll, that magazine she subscribed to that keeps coming to the house, or the camera she left on her desk by accident.
- Medicine and Health: Sending bottles of pain killers, contacts (and its solution) or an extra pair of glasses can be a huge life safer. Also, cotton balls, Q-tips, band-aids can all be useful, so that she doesn’t always have to run to the Nurse’s office to get minor things.
And this definitely isn’t an exhaustive list; just a few ideas to help get your package sent and ready. A care package can be a pleasant surprise, especially when you’re not expecting it, and it’s one of the best feelings to feel like you’re being taken care of.
